What is Public Access?

‘Public Access’ is where certain barristers in England and Wales can be instructed directly by members of the public.

Following a change in the rules, rather than having to instruct a solicitor to appoint a barrister for you, Public Access allows the public to instruct a barrister directly.  A solicitor is not involved.  The barrister will accept your instructions to provide legal advice or to represent you in court.

Members of the public now have the option of instructing a Public Access barrister to provide these services.

The Public Access Scheme has been introduced to open the legal system to the public.  It is part of a wider scheme to make it easier, and cheaper, for the general public to access legal advice.
